A leading tomato producer in Wellerlooi, Netherlands, is integrating a 1 MW / 2.4 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) to enhance grid flexibility and reduce energy costs. Developed with Battlink and implemented by VTI Horst, the project reflects a growing trend among Dutch horticultural businesses to invest in smart, self-sufficient energy solutions.
The system, managed by DNO Energiebox, will enable better use of on-site solar power, support peak shaving, and reduce dependence on the strained national grid. Local media GroentenNieuws.nl highlighted this project as an example of how the greenhouse sector is adopting advanced energy management to address rising prices and limited grid capacity.
Liquid-cooled technology was chosen over traditional air-cooled systems, offering improved thermal management, higher safety standards, and extended operational lifespan—critical factors for energy-intensive greenhouse operations.
The installation is expected to be fully operational by September 2025, providing dynamic capacity expansion and new revenue opportunities through grid services.
